Don´t say anything right now
“The Artist”: ten reasons why you should definitely watch a black&white silent in 2012.
1 Our world is unsettled and people talk way too much
Shh, be quiet, please. No text messages any more, no more whispering. That’s a challenge, but it works. “The Artist” is 100 minutes pure leisure. Time to Breathe deeply!2 The magic of cinema in its purest form
The senses are stimulated instead of numbed. The audience is animated to have a closer look, becomes part of the movie by creating the dialogues and sounds with its own imagination. The images of the movie are first completed in your mind. You can only hear the music and the laughter in the movie theater. The collective experience is more intensive: magic of cinema in its purest form.3 The plot is set in 1927, it is, however, very modern
The hero, an acclaimed silent movie star is experiencing a turning point in history: the sound. At first, he can only laugh about it. But soon he realizes that his career is in danger. Moral: Who is unable to adapt to a rapidly changing world, stumbles and may be unable to get up on his feet again. A feeling not only burn-out victims know.4 Jean Dujardin
His director Michel Hazanavicus wrote the role especially for him. Dujardin, one of France´s greatest movie stars is from the cabaret, he is a thoroughbred comedian and is someone who loves the stage. He celebrated huge successes as a moronic pseudo surfer in “Brice de Nice” and as a James Bond cartoon in the “OSS 117” movies. The 39 year-old is a formidable silent movie star with his incredible facial expressions like Douglas Fairbanks or Valentino.5 Bérenice Bejo
In the movie she is called Peppy and bewitches George and us with her saucer eyes, her physical play and her chutzpa. A sassy It-Girl of the twenties. The born Argentinian and partner of director Hazanavicus shows how right silent movie diva Norma Desmond was: “We didn´t need dialogue. We had faces!”6 A movie for everyone
Rare enough: Both audience and critics have fallen for the movie´s charm, it´s purity and tenderness. In Cannes they got 15 minutes standing ovations, the movie was awarded with more than 30 awards, among them three Golden Globes. The one or the other Oscar is following. For sure.7 The movie takes itself seriously, but it´s no complicated artistic cinema, but entertainment
”The Artist” wants to entertain people and doesn´t want to be an ironic reflection. It becomes light French art with its sense for that past time and its original ideas - in one scene Peppy flirts with George´s empty jacket.8 Hoplessly romantic
The encounter between the silent movie hero and his admirer who is soon to be a movie star herself is a classic Hollywood love story. The true romance, however, grows between us, the callous audience of the digital age and the innocence of old mechanic film artistry.9 The whole thing has simply style
Men in chic tux, women in pretty dresses, old-timer cars, art déco - all of that in elegant black and white. We feel a sense for nostalgia, a world that no longer exists.10 And of course - Uggie!
Dogs are the conquerors of hearts. In cinema anyway. And this smart Jack-Russell Terrier, 10. A Hollywood thoroughbred who has already played in many movies. Uggie was rescued from a kennel by trainer Omar von Muller. He ended up there because the previous owners thought he was too wild. A real adventurer.Stern magazine (issue no.5/2012)
